After winning each of his three fights this year, UFC lightweight titleholder Benson Henderson was named MMA Weekly’s 2012 Fighter of the Year.
“It’s nice to be recognized for what you do,” Henderson told MMAWeekly Radio. “Fighter of the Year, there’s a lot of great fighters out there, a lot of tough fighters out there, I’ll definitely take it.”
In February, Henderson was crowned the UFC lightweight champion after beating Frankie Edgar in a tightly contested battle. Facing Edgar again in a rematch in August, Henderson successfully defended his title.
For his second title defense, Henderson fought No. 1 lightweight contender Nate Diaz. Although the fight was expected to be close, Henderson dominated Diaz from start to end, which led to a one-sided decision win.
Almost six million viewers saw Henderson defeat Diaz, which eventually helped him garner the Fighter of the Year award.
