One of the the biggest Asian cinema events to hit Southern California opens on May 10. The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, presented by Visual Communications, features the latest works by established and emerging filmmakers, along with seminars, panel discussions and symposiums on topics relevant to Asian Pacific cinema.
Opening Night features “Shanghai Calling,” directed by Daniel Hsia and starring Korean American Daniel Henney, who plays a Chinese American expat lawyer navigating his way through the mean streets of Shanghai (the picture above also indicates he is a raisin smuggler). The 13th annual Newport Beach Film Festival will showcase over 350 films from across the globe from April 26 to May 3.
The Asian Showcase, with presenting media support from MYX TV, is one of the nightly International Spotlight events the Festival hosts each year at Fashion Island, celebrating the extensive Asian history and culture. It will feature three film screenings from Korea, China, and Japan, and will follow with a post-screening party, a gala celebration of Asian entertainment, food and culture.
“My Way” is the featured film from South Korea and tells the story of childhood rivals Jook-sik and Tatsuo who both grow up to serve in the Japanese Army during World War II. Continue Reading »

It’s the new year, and Yim Jae Beum is coming to town! After a sold-out show in Los Angeles last October, he is coming back to hold two U.S. concerts for the 2012 Lunar New Year. Everyone already knows this man can sing! He’s got an impressive resume, debuting as a rock singer back in 1986, releasing Korean classics, such as “For You,” and most recently, joining and winning first place twice on the MBC show, “I am a Singer.”
