The San Diego Asian Film Foundation is launching a national public service announcement contest to help increase voter participation among Asian Pacific Islander Americans this election year. The contest, dubbed “Reel in the Vote,” challenges anyone with a video camera to help make a difference in 30 seconds. Still not inspired? Winners will receive $2,000 in prizes, a free trip to the San Diego Asian Film Festival (in October), and exposure galore—the top three videos will run on the SDAFF website, and screen before every film throughout the fest.

The deadline for entries is August 31. (www.sdaff.org)

With high profile incidents like the recent sinking of the South Korean Navy ship and the capture of American journalists, tensions mount in the Korean Peninsula.

It’s time for us to get educated.

As part of its T.H.I.N.K. (Topple Hunger in North Korea) Conference in Los Angeles, the Korean American Coalition is assembling a rare panel of experts on North Korea, including two of the highest profile defectors from the “Hermit Kingdom.” This is a unique opportunity to gain fresh insight into a country that remains stubbornly frozen in the Cold War era, in a region that holds deep cultural, economic and military ties with the U.S.

The event, which will take place on June 25 and 26 at the Westin Bonaventure, will feature guest speakers Sang Man Han (Founder, Han-Schneider Int’l Children’s Foundation), Cheol-Hwan Kang (DPRK defector & Journalist in Seoul), Professor David Kang (Director, USC Korean Studies), David J. Karl (President, Asia Strategy Initiative), Dr. Ae-Ran Lee (DPRK defector and 2010 Int’l Women of Courage Award recipient), John S. Park (Sr. Research Associate, U.S. Institute of Peace) and Suzanne Scholte (President, Defense Forum Foundation).

Let’s have a night on the town!

Los Angeles’ Ktown, that is.

KoreAm is hosting a free screening of two of the hottest, most hilarious new films, “Ktown Cowboys,” which just nabbed the Best First Feature Award at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific American Film Festival, and the zany “Ajumma! Are you Krazy???” which won the Audience Award at the Hawaii International Film Festival.

It’s all happening on June 8. Check out our flier.

Both films will be screened at the brand new CGV Theaters. Afterwards, we’ll head on over to Biergarten for some food and drinks.

Space is limited so make sure to RSVP to rsvp@iamkoream.com as soon as possible. First come, first served. You may RSVP for yourself and one guest. We’ll need both of your names.

Hope to see you there!
