Andre Kim, arguably Korea’s most iconic fashion designer, passed away Thursday, due to complications from pneumonia.
In 1966, Andre Kim, born Kim Bong Nam, became the first Korean designer to hold a fashion show in Paris, and he continued to hold fashion shows both internationally and nationally throughout his lengthy career. His over-the-top fashion shows often featured top Korean celebrities as well as models, and his clothes were also worn by international stars such as Michael Jackson and Brooke Shields.
“I have great pride in my country and Asia, and this is very important for my purpose. Internationally, European arts and culture are better known. But I wanted to show ― through my artistic fashion collection ― that Korea is also very artistic. I wanted to show Korea’s rich and high culture to impress them,” Kim said to the Korea Times.

Besides being known for his elaborate creations, Kim was famous for only wearing white and heavy black eyeliner, making him an easily recognizable public icon.
Kim’s last show was held earlier this year in Beijing. He was unmarried, but is survived by his adopted son
It’s so sad that he passed away… he’s accomplished so much. Koreans didn’t believe in him and his work, but he proved them wrong. He made it big in Europe. He made a name for Korean designers!
I cannot believe this happened…. It seemed like he was so full of energy, enthusiasm and love for life and fashion that I never expected this to happen. It’s unfortunate that he left too soon, but his impact on Korean culture and fashion will be remembered.
