I LOVE OMMA DEAREST!!! :-)
while i understand the real potential/purpose of some comedy as biting social satire for social issues that matter (e.g. “rampant racism” within the korean/korean american community), is it just me or are these OMMA DEAREST skits pretty darn… problematic?
having a man portray a “typical” korean mother is one thing. okay, i can MAYBE laugh at that (haha, it’s koream drag. got it). but the faux accent and mannerisms… even as a korean american man i find it more than a little offensive if not also um… “racist?” or at least anti-immigrant. i still find it particularly problematic that so much of the 2nd generation asian american community so casually belittles 1st or 1.5 generation koreans in the u.s. (also “korean americans”) in their bid to assert their “americanness.”
i don’t disagree with the critique these series are making. yes, racism is a problem among many of our parents. but let’s not forget context and where they’re coming from–a country they left probably sometime in the late 70s or early 80s where “race” was still a rather “foreign concept.” hell, i have korean parents myself and deal with this stuff still, as a soon to be 30-year old man. but the method of conveying this method is pretty darn INSULTING. i doubt any korean international students i know would find this drama so light-hearted and funny. things to think about.
