Name: Amos Yi
Age: 20
Location: Northern Virginia
Occupation: Cadet/student at the Virginia Military Institute
Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
My dad. He is a typical Korean immigrant in America and is seriously the hardest working, most dedicated person I’ve ever met, if I could be half as persistent as he in his work, then I will be a satisfied man.
What do you feel is your most attractive physical feature?
Gosh, too hard to pick, but I’m going to go with my smile, hair, body, or Korean eyes. (In no particular order of course!) I hope this doesn’t make me sound conceited.
What would you leave in your will for the person you care about the most?
I wouldn’t be able to put a finger on who I care about most in my life, because there are too many to name! I’d give ehu (my ukulele), lilo (my Kia car), and a smile – so that if I ever do pass away, he/she will remember our happy times.
What is the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning?
Another day, another blessing to be alive But if it’s Saturday, “I can’t believe I’m waking up this early … GAH!”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Besides looking like I’m still 16 years old, fulfilling my aspirations and dreams! Whether that means in the middle of backpacking across Europe and Asia, or deployed in a combat zone, who knows.
If you could only go to one restaurant for the next five years, which would it be?
Being a native of northern Virginia, I frequent Annandale/Centreville a lot, and if I could only go to ONE restaurant for the rest of my life, it would be hands down, one of those ‘ALL YOU CAN EAT’ Korean BBQ buffets. You already know what’s up, bulgogi!
What is set as the background on your computer?
Do your work. Don’t be stupid. (a little”personal” motivation for me when surfing the web instead of homework.)
What takes you out of your comfort zone?
After my college experience so far, not much can do so! Confident as ever, however the occasional pretty woman can make me a little nervous from time to time. Honest Abe here.
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would it be and why?
Believe it or not, I still haven’t been to the motherland. I would LOVE to visit Seoul, if given the opportunity.
Do you have any phobias?
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Google it.
Tell us what type of person you could see yourself settling down with
A selfless, friendly woman with a sense of humor. It helps if she has a killer smile – she would literally brighten my day each morning when I wake up next to her. I also love my Korean food, so it would be so AWESOME if she could cook, so that I don’t have to call my mother up for a constant supply of kimchi. Half kidding.
What is your best and worst trait?
My best trait is my ability to brighten someone else’s day; I am very talented at that! My worst trait is my double-edged motivational personality. Sometimes when I want to finish a paper, or study for a test, I do that, rather than going out with my friends and having a good time!
What do you think is the greatest invention in your lifetime is and why?
I was born into the technological era, and I could go ahead and say the advancement of the cellular devices, laptops, etc. but I’m going to say, the GREATEST invention of all time is Korean food.
Do you have any words that you live by?
“Study Hard, Play Harder.” Finding the perfect balance is essential to making the most out of your college years. When you have a test coming up, devote your time to studying and make sure you get that ‘A’! On the contrary though, when you’re out with your friends, have fun, don’t hold back.
Tell us about the hardest thing you’ve ever done.
Hands down, freshmen year of college. A rewarding experience, but would I ever do it again? Negative.
How would you describe your style in clothing?
A very timeless sense of fashion: the East Coast Prep/Ivy League look. When not in uniform, you are bound to see me in a pair of khakis, with an OCBD shirt, and Sperry’s/Clark’s desert boots on. In my opinion, fashion is a statement of self-expression. What do your clothes say? And besides, my outfit is already picked out for me nine months of the year, so when I do get a choice on what I get to wear, I go all out.
If you could choose one song to describe your life, what would it be and why?
“Lean On Me” [by Bill Withers]. Besides the fact that I love to sing it in the shower, (a secret between you and me), my whole life I’ve always been the one to give comfort to my friends, and making sure loved ones around me felt happy and stress-free.
What is your most vivid childhood memory?
Getting my cheeks constantly pinched all the time by the older neighborhood girls.
I Am KoreAm and proud because… of our close family ties, cultural heritage, virtuous values, and amazing cuisine. I can say that I can eat more spicy food than most of my non-Korean friends. Thank you, kimchi!
are you single?
