Staten Island, N.Y. resident Jin Ok Choi walked into a liquor store last month to buy a bottle of baek saeju, or Korean rice wine, to bring to a party she was attending. Little did she know that she would walk out with a winning lottery ticket for the $85 million Mega Millions jackpot.
Choi, 54, said she was compelled to buy a $5 quick-pick lottery ticket after she saw how high the jackpot size was. But when she discovered she won, she couldn’t believe it.
“I [was] just shocked. I can’t explain it,” said Choi to the Staten Island Advance.
Choi, who is retired, opted to take the lump-sum prize which nets her more than $40 million after taxes, according to the New York Daily News. The Korean immigrant, who has been living in the States for about 15 years, says she plans to purchase a larger condo and “upgrade her life.”
Foolish. If I was her I wouldn’t let the media expose me as the lottery winner. You know how many strangers all of a sudden become your “friend, long lost relative” etc.? Lawyers and other vultures somehow magically find your contact info too, and they harrass the hell out of you.
“upgrade her life” Bit of an understatement there…
