K-pop global superstar Psy’s viral hit song “Gangnam Style” is now the most-watched video on YouTube.
Psy’s music video on his official YouTube channel reached 806 million hits on Sunday, surpassing Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” which held the previous record at 804 million views since it was posted on the site in February 2010. The rise of “Gangnam Style” to the top of YouTube’s most popular music video chart had been expected for some time after it became the most “liked” video in September, just two months after being uploaded to the site.
“Gangnam Style” first appeared on YouTube in July, and passed 10 million hits in just two weeks. By October, the video shot past the 700-million mark. On the other hand, it took 33 months for Bieber’s “Baby” to pass 800 million hits.
Following “Gangnam Style” and “Baby” on YouTube’s most-watched videos list are Jennifer Lopez’s “On The Floor” (602 million hits), Eminem’s “Love The Way You Lie” (510 million), and LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” (500 million). Among the songs in YouTube’s Top 5, “Gangnam Style” is the only song that’s available strictly in digital format.
