South Korean pop phenomenon Psy received the New Media Prize for the viral online success of his “Gangnam Style” megahit at the 40th American Music Awards (AMA) show on Sunday.
Psy also performed a remixed version of “Gangnam Style” with MC Hammer during the show held at the L.A. Nokia Theater. Wearing a voluminous pair of Hammer pants, Psy was later joined by Hammer halfway through the performance. Psy and Hammer then performed a mash-up of “Gangnam Style” and “Too Legit 2 Quit.”
The surprising collaboration between Psy and Hammer was made possible by Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun, according to CNN.
“Psy is fantastic,” Hammer told CNN. “He’s shifted the planet. He’s got the whole world dancing. And it’s a rarity in this world. Only four people made that happen in history – James Brown, Michael Jackson, yours truly and Psy.”
Psy added: “Honestly, I practiced [Hammer's] move[s] 20 years ago. So I’ve done that for 20 years.”
