CONTEST DESCRIPTION

Lust. Envy. Deceit. Amnesia. It must be Korean drama time!
To celebrate the launch of iamKoreAm.com, Verizon Wireless and Asiana Airlines are sponsoring a video contest starring you! Your mission: To create your own K-drama scene.
We want it all—mobsters, catfights, mistaken identities, fatal illnesses, and of course, plenty of over-the-top sobbing. Let your imagination run wild.
So write a script, cast your friends, turn on the video camera and get moving! Clips must be no longer than three minutes and submitted by Nov. 8.
That week, we’ll post the top 10 videos for readers to vote on.
Submit your entry by uploading a video response to this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0L5xMXcN-M
Three finalists (two that receive that the most votes and one that editors pick) will win two tickets to KoreAm’s exclusive celebrity-studded gala “Unforgettable” in Los Angeles (a $500 value), where their videos will be screened. Attendees will vote for their favorite scene via text messaging. The winner will take home one round-trip ticket to Korea from Asiana Airlines and a Verizon Wireless phone.
The rules and details:
- Scenes must be in English, or subtitled in English.
- You can remake a scene from an existing Korean drama, but try to avoid using the original audio. Dubbing in your own lines is part of the fun!
- Submissions must be original creations. The video must not have been previously submitted, distributed or aired.
- No profanity or sexually-explicit content.
- Videos will be judged on originality, humor and overall impressiveness.

Hi, since the deadline got extended, I was just wondering if I could send in another video? (part I) and also re-edit the 2nd one. My editing was in a rush because I didn’t find out about the contest until the night before it’s due.. which is (Sunday’s night”).
How come we can’t vote???
i am so glad i didnt participate in this
cuz my video would have turned out
to be SO Retarded and AMAteurish looking…
i could tell just by watching these
ya’ll have some background
in filmmaking already…
i was entertained by watching all of them ^_^
Aaaww TJ
you should have tried anyway! :)
it’s fun ! haha
especially when you do it with friends
great way to bond too
I agree with Ngoc! We’ll definitely be having more contests soon — and they will be even bigger and better. The more people who participate, the more fun it is for everyone.
voting section has problem because you cannot vote for certain entry!! help
please check for all the entries to make sure! thanks ^^
I love these videos. It sure does remind me how we all love Korean videos.
ALL I GOTA SAY IS the one by NGOC LEE IS LEGIT YO LEGIT. shizzzzz from fellow davis-
I’m having the same problem, Elaine. Can’t seem to vote for any video…
The fact that the deadline was magically extended, which allowed time for additional entries, and threw out all the previous votes that other videos had, is very shady.
Almost like you had friends who had not heard about the contest and then you changed the rules for them.
I find it highly, HIGHLY suspect and this is not what I expect from a magazine of KoreAm’s status.
I guess there is one rule for KoreAm friends, and a whole other set for everyone else
haha. I actually turned my entry on time. There was only 5 entries at that time and 2 of them were from the same person. I’m glad they extended the deadline. Other ppl who couldn’t make it on time got to have an opportunity to submit & share their art. There’s nothing wrong with having more choices for people to pick .. Although having less competitions was more beneficial for me >.< haha.
Actually what it ‘means’ is – they didn’t think that they videos submitted were ‘good enough’ to be winners, so they brought in ‘ringers’ of people they knew who are professional filmmakers. Because the winners are screened at the big dinner with all the big Korean American Execs etc, who support the magazine.
I mean – does anyone NOT recognize the actors in GOCHU from Typhoon and West 32nd? So fine, there are ‘ringers’. But then, don’t call it a ‘contest’, and don’t make it open to public vote.
Take in the videos and announce the winner you obviously ‘wanted’ to announce and don’t waste everyone’s time. I think it’s great that there are amateurs out there who submitted, because it comes from the Latin word ‘to love’, which is great – but then don’t judge them as ‘not good enough’ and bring in pros.
Not to mention all the problems in voting that people are having, so who knows if the votes are really valid? I mean, the first time it was ‘up’ on the site, it was a totally different order. Now the ones that were first are in the middle, ones that never were there in the first place are first in line. It’s a joke. And…the filmmakers who submitted on time, and within the parameters of the rules should be outraged – because they FOLLOWED THE RULES.
KoreAm does not respect the people who go their work in on time. So they redid the rules to help their favorites win. Yes, it’s very Korean. But, it’s not a contest. Nope. Not at all. And why so much drama with it?
Especially when the prize is only $500 in tickets to a dinner and 1, yes only 1, round trip ticket to Korea. No cash.
hey Notquitegettingit, as someone who helped with the GOCHU short film that you mentioned, let me just say that the film would have been finished on time, by the original Nov 8 deadline. i was the one that actually notified the editor about the extension, and so he simply used the extra time to add a couple tweaks. but in all honesty, i saw the rough cut that was done by Nov 8 and it’s barely any different than the final cut you see above.
before attacking the validity of people’s hard work and bringing negativity to an otherwise wonderful contest, please take a moment before you start throwing around wild accusations. let me assure you that everyone who worked on the GOCHU film put in a LOT of hard work and VERY long hours to make (all without any compensation and costs coming out of their own pockets, might i add).
[...] website! Just log on to their homepage and cast your votes! Don’t forget to vote for GOCHU! http://iamkoream.com/the-koream-drama-fo -yo-mama-contest/ [...]
I’m not attacking GOCHU, I liked it a lot. But you have to admit, it would have been BETTER and MORE ETHICAL to have submitted it on the ORIGINAL deadline, and then when the extension was announced, to put the re-edited version up there, as I believe I noticed other pieces did. There’s some additional episodes of certain pieces that were not up in the original flow.
I think a deadline is a deadline. No contest that keeps extending has validity. It’s not the quality of the work that I question – it is the timing. Also, I do believe GOCHU deserves to win, I really laughed when I saw it, I thought it was well produced, well acted, but…it is obviously a very professional production. And truthfully, if you invested ’so much’ time and money in it – it’s not soley for this little contest. There’s another goal there – possibly it is a pitch for a feature film and you want to win to get the notice at the KoreAm dinner.
Fair enough. I’m certain you’ll be there. Again, I really liked it – but I think the whole way this ‘contest’ was run is questionable. And truthfully, I don’t think the ‘public’ should vote on these things – I think yes, it should be shown on the website, but I think a panel of professionals should judge. Otherwise it’s just a popularity contest and a ‘how many folks do you know’.
So my suggestion is – have the contest next year, no extensions. Publicize it better so the playing field is as competitive as the magazine feels it should be, display the submissions, but have a panel vote and then announce it at the dinner with the three highest rated there.
Oh – and give them a PAIR of tickets to Korea. What the heck are these filmmakers going to do with ONE ticket?
Hey Gochu Defender,
Just realized you said that you found out the deadline was extended while your piece was at the Editors.
But the deadline was a ‘hard’ one on Sunday, and they did not announce the extention till Monday.
The Monday following the Sunday deadline. It was supposed to be a ’surprise’.
Which means you should have already had a Gochu version up there, regardless of minor changes,
just to make the deadline.
But, you left it at the Editor because you knew it was going to be extended. Or rather, you ‘heard’.
Which means, you already knew. Or you would have had Gochu in by the Sunday deadline.
Which means, someone either talked to you or you had some sort of other knowledge of the contest
that was not available to to the other filmmakers.
That’s show biz I guess. But do not get upon high moral ground if you already admitted that you knew
something other people submitting did not. And do not say that I am taking the shine off this contest,
when by the very nature of your response, you have admitted that you had an inner working knowledge
of the contest and it’s rules and deadlines.
See, I said it was shady and it is. Totally shady. Not taking the greatness of GOCHU away, as I said,
I really, really liked it – but…it’s shady.
So be it.
I picture many such awards in your future. Congratulations in advance.
the voting doesn’t work. the last time i voted was 3 days ago and it won’t let me vote again.
ok the voting works now, but phones before flowers isn’t showing up. what’s going on with this thing! it won’t let me vote for phones before flowers! they deserve at least 5+ votes just from me.
guys, if your poll isn’t showing voting option for “Phones Before Flowers” try emptying the cache on your browser, then refresh.

Kanye West, is that you??
the girl in gochu is hot
Hi everyone,
This contest was created to be fun, fair and friendly, and I’m sorry if anyone thinks that is not the case. Several different contestants asked for more time at the last minute, which is why we decided to extend the contest. We did not know if we were going to receive any submissions by the Nov. 8 deadline as the day before, there were zero. The extension allowed us to accept more submissions, which has made the competition more exciting for everyone. Some of those who did get their videos in by the Nov. 8 deadline (we thank you so much for that!) were able to go back and re-edit their videos to make them even better.
As dpd mentioned, if you are having voting problems, please try emptying your cache on your browser.
This is our first contest and we admit that there have been some kinks. We are learning and guarantee that the next time we do this (there will be a next time!), it will all run much more smoothly. But please know that we are not playing favorites with anyone. We had no idea what to expect when we received these submissions and have honestly been blown away by the hard work and talent put into all of them. Our only goal with this contest was to bring together the community through a friendly competition.
(: the main guy from “stairway to autumn sonata” is cute.
OMG. i cant believe no one here has
mentioned lanny joon in the omma dearest videos..
i’ve seen him on tv and i think he
played in west 32nd too..
omg, that guy is like so eye candy…
so mega cute…
Sorry Gochu Defender,
I was out kissing Taylor Swift’s ass.
But still – shady yo. I get it. That’s the way it rolls.
If everyone who submitted prior to Sun did not know that there
was an extension coming, and you did…?
I ain’t sayin you a Goldigger….
KW
I tried to vote at least 4 times now and Phones before Flowers is still not showing up. I also emptied my cache. I am on Internet Explorer and it does not work, however, on my laptop (Firefox) it worked the first day. Please HELP!
hey Notquitegettingit,
get a life. you sound pathetic and very bitter. and no you don’t sound respectable. keep repeating yourself and i doesn’t work. you are korean, so stop saying ‘yo’ like you’re black. you come in here talking about korean’s being shady? just watch the videos and vote.
by the way, did you even read the comment posting by a person who works for the magazine? she said the people who submitted before the deadline got to work on their submissions more. if anything they had more face time on the website.
again you seriously sound pathetic. stop writing on this message board a thousand times and go make some friends.
Hey Supporteveryone
I am American. I don’t have to recognize any heritage other than that.
I don’t have to be an idiot to know that of COURSE the magazine is going to defend itself.
If you really support everyone, stop trying to segregate based on language, what you perceive race
to be, and what ‘my place’ in it is. It’s great to be “Hyung this” and “Hyung that”, but this is AMERICA,
and I love ALL parts of it – not just the Korean parts.
There is innate racism in the way you responded.
Hip hop is AMERICAN – what, are you one of those folks who supports America’s Best Dance Crew
as long as the Asians win? The dancers use ‘yo’ and ‘word’ – are you telling me they are less Korean
because they do so? Are we not supposed to watch MTV now because we’re Korean? Am I not supposed
to live in the culture I was born in, because of ethnic background and what YOU consider to be good behavior?
I hang with EVERYONE, not just people who look like me or my Parents.
I support equality. I support questioning. I support using your brain. And if I WANT to respond, I will.
Also – if this wasn’t hitting a target – why would you all be so sensitive? If it wasn’t hitting home, why
would the magazine even issue a response?
I don’t hate anything except bad grammar and poor linguistic phrasing – both of which you seem to display
in abundance. If you can’t SEE that my response was embracing the Kanye comment by GOCHU
Defender, then you are humorless.
And…your math skills are for ___, because I thought ANYONE could count to FIVE.
Geez. How sad.
For the record, I tried to vote – and as many times as I was able to, there were days I was NOT able to because of the way it was set up, something SEVERAL people have commented on here. While I expressed frustration at the changing rules and format, I did NOT comment on any of the content of the videos in terms of artistic merit – just in terms of how they were submitted and the time frame.
Something that, IN AMERICA, we are allowed to do, yo?
I love that you all tell me to grow up and behave, why don’t you all grow up and pay attention?
