Maine Teen First Non-Korean to Place In Korean Speech Contest

A Caucasian high school student from Maine became the first person not of Korean descent to place in a national Korean speech contest, according to the Chosun Ilbo. Alyssa Donovan placed second in the contest hosted by the U.S. National Association for Korean Schools in Burlingame, Calif. last Friday, besting more than 300 competitors along the way. The 14-year-old said she became interested in the Korean language due to a crush on a Korean-American classmate in April 2007. When the 10th grader from the Deering High School in Maine said, “I could not confess to the boy who made me study Korean because he moved away,” the crowd burst into laughter. She drew a big round of applause when she went on to add that she “continued to study Korean, and got to love Korea instead of him.” The highschooler told the Chosun Ilbo that it only took her six months to pick up conversational fluency in Korean. She progressed through various literary translations and recently read the four Shakespearean tragedies in Korean. In the preliminaries of the New England Chapter, Donovan had raised herself to such a level that even students of Korean origin were unable to compete with her. Alyssa, a big fan of K-pop and Korean dramas, added that she is considering attending college in South Korea. Henry Cho Returns To TV With Sketch Comedy Show

Peter Kang Comedian and good ol’ boy Henry Cho is returning to the small screen with his new sketch comedy show, “The Henry Cho Show,” set for its pilot debut this Thursday on the Great American Country network. The 49-year-old comic told KoreAm in a phone interview he pitched the show as a “modern-day Carol Burnett Show” featuring “clean comedy” that can be watched by the whole family. “I had this sketch comedy idea for a while and had a window to pitch it and so I did and GAC opted to do it,” Cho said. “There is less exposure and less money but there wasn’t a lot of red tape. There were less layers to work through so the creativity didn’t get watered down. I just did what I did and they loved it.” …

Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival

One of the the biggest Asian cinema events to hit Southern California opens on May 10. The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, presented by Visual Communications, features the latest works by established and emerging filmmakers, along with seminars, panel discussions and symposiums on topics relevant to Asian Pacific cinema.

Opening Night features “Shanghai Calling,” directed by Daniel Hsia and starring Korean American Daniel Henney, who plays a Chinese American expat lawyer navigating his way through the mean streets of Shanghai (the picture above also indicates he is a raisin smuggler).
